Mitchell Haynes: A Faith-Driven Journey to Oklahoma’s Governor Race
In the world of politics, it’s not uncommon for candidates to have unique stories that shape their paths. For Mitchell Haynes, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Oklahoma, her journey has been one of faith, resilience, and extraordinary experiences.
Haynes recalls a divine moment in her childhood. “In third grade, God told me I would be a governor,” she shared. Although her life took her in different directions over the years, that calling stayed with her, even if she didn’t act on it immediately. It wasn’t until 2023, in what she describes as a supernatural encounter, that her path toward the governor’s office became clear.
Haynes was sitting in the Walmart auto section in Choctaw, waiting for her car to be repaired, when a stranger struck up a conversation. “And all of a sudden, she says, ‘If you’re going to be a governor, what are you doing to get ready for it?’” Haynes recalled. The woman’s words struck a chord, especially when she mentioned, “All you do is go to casinos.” Haynes admitted the truth of the statement, acknowledging the woman knew things she hadn’t shared. “I got in the car, and I said, ‘Lord, if you want me to do this, I will be obedient.’”
This encounter, which Haynes firmly believes was with an angel, reignited her purpose. “It definitely was an angel,” she said. “That was the first one. It shocked me.”
At 60 years old, Haynes brings a wealth of experience to her campaign. She previously served as city manager for Rios Communities, New Mexico, and now manages real estate properties in Choctaw. Her prior runs for public office, including Oklahoma County Clerk and Harrah mayor, may not have been successful, but they prepared her for the challenge ahead.
How Resilience and Purpose Define Mitchell Haynes’ 2026 Campaign
Unlike her well-funded opponents, including Attorney General Gentner Drummond and U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern, Haynes is running as what she describes as the “dark horse” candidate. “I may be the one that nobody knows,” she admitted. “I’m not the career politician, and I’m not famous. But you’re looking at one hard worker, and I’m going to be the vote.”
Thus far, Haynes has invested her own resources into the campaign, spending $1,600 on website design, $1,649 on flyers, and $900 on hotel stays. While she has yet to report donations, she remains hopeful. “It will be coming in,” she said with confidence.
Haynes’ vision for Oklahoma is rooted in her dedication to the people and her faith. She has faced challenges head-on and drawn strength from what she describes as divine encounters. Her campaign reflects her belief in hard work, resilience, and the importance of following one’s calling.
For Haynes, this journey isn’t just about winning a title; it’s about inspiring others to act on their purpose. “I’m writing a book about these experiences to encourage others,” she shared. “It’s about trusting in something greater and stepping out in faith.”
As the 2026 gubernatorial race unfolds, Mitchell Haynes stands as a testament to the power of belief, perseverance, and the willingness to answer life’s most profound callings. Whether as a “dark horse” or a guiding light, she remains determined to make a difference in the lives of Oklahomans.
